One of the most difficult parts of having pets is knowing when your home isn't a good fit for a particular pet. There are any number of reasons why a home wouldn't be a good fit. In our case, we are a good fit for the animals, and they are a good fit for us. It's just two of them that aren't good fits for each other. The two puppies we got back in late February still fight horribly and try to tear each other apart. They are much bigger now and we're unable to separate them. This means, one needs to find a new home.
We had to make the decision of which one had to go. Since the other one gets along well with the other animals, including the cats, we decided it would be Nate. Now Nate is a wonderful dog. He is calm around other people, and gentle, and very mild mannered. He doesn't nip or bite at us, unlike the other one, and takes quickly to training. We love Nate just as much as we love Rocky. We figured the above qualities are what would make him most adoptable and inprove his chances of a successful adoption.
Today he met his new family. It consists of an older man, his disabled wife, and some cats. Roy said that Nate would be his wife's dog but Nate very clearly picked Roy. That isn't to say he won't love Grace and love being spoiled by her but Roy is the one who Nate didn't want to take his eyes off of. And while they said he'd be outside for the most part, something tells me he's going to be an inside/outside dog just like here. Well, as long as he can keep from chasing the cats!
Bear will be going to help them build a fence for Nate tomorrow to help keep him in the yard. Then he will also be heading over there every couple of days to work on training Nate a bit more. Grace does have special needs and Roy is a bit older. They can't be fussed with things like sit, stay, come, etc. So Bear is going to work on that with him.
Over all, it seems to be a good match and we're very happy with it. As much as we hate having to give him up at all, we would hate it even more if Nate and Rocky managed to tear each other apart, or if we had to have one put down for killing the other.
On Tuesday, Princess Pie will be saying good bye to Nate. She will be broken, but also learning a valuable lesson at the same time. Sometimes, when we love something, we have to love it enough to set it free.
