This last weekend was an eventful weekend. At least, it was for my computer. Early in the week, I had tried to start up my SkyDrive for a sync. It wouldn't load up, however. This is a bit of a problem. I back up all of my files every day to multiple locations. Being unable to perform my back ups is a pretty serious issue.
So I thought that perhaps it was a firewall issue. I tried to open my firewall to find out if it was blocking it, and was unable to open the firewall. The error message seemed to say that either the firewall wasn't even there or I had no permission to access it.
Well, I thought that I had permissions to access the firewall. I could have sworn I had permission anyway. I logged off of that account and signed into a known admin account. That one couldn't access it either. I couldn't access my user panel or anything else.
At this point, I knew that I had an infection. I hopped onto Housecall and it found TDSS. After getting rid of this one, I attempted to restore the missing dll files. Unfortunately, life was sucking. These attempts were to be as successful as my first marriage. I was facing a full reload.
I get everything up and running and start reinstalling software. A year and a half ago, I purchased Office Pro Plus 2010. Because this computer is associated with my company, I wanted to be sure that all programs were legitimate. It's important that all programs are legitimate. So, I shopped around and got the best deal that I could. Everything appeared to be on the up and up.
Until Sunday when I tried to reinstall it. I was unable to activate the program. Several phone calls later revealed that the program had been activated many times and had been flagged in the system. The company that I bought it from did not return calls or emails.
So either Microsoft wanted to force me to upgrade to 2013, or I was sold a pirated copy of the software. Either way, after fighting with my computer for three days, I had lost all patience.
I split the partition and loaded Linux Ubuntu onto one of the partitions. It's been several years since I've used Linux. My last attempts left me crying out tears of frustration. I once swore that I'd never turn to Linux again. Until yesterday.
Tired of the constant malware threats and easy hackability, frustrated with the need to upgrade operating systems every two years, and irritated by not being able to use what I purchased, I threw my hands up and did a bit of research.
Dude... Ubuntu is easy. It's a lot easier than Microsoft even. So far, it also appears to be stable as well. It's clean and fast. I don't remember Linux ever being this user friendly! Even though I messed up the installation, (I think) it still runs very well.
Oh, and graphics? Fantastic! My husbands Microsoft computer is lagging a lot more than ours is. I switched our TV computer and my Netbook to Ubuntu also. Once I figure out how to do more on this system, I may totally get rid of Windows altogether.
I am bucking the system over here and feeling like a rebel! What keeps you from trying Linux?
