For those just tuning in, Little Mama is a kitten that was first led here by our now deceased cat, Alexis. Little Mama was abandoned by her previous family, just a kitten herself, and pregnant. We've been trying to catch her since October. She had five or six kittens, but only one is still alive now. We caught him Friday.
Last night, I went to bed early because I had a feeling today would start early. And boy, was I right! Just before five a.m. I hear "CLINK". I knew it was the cat trap we had outside. We caught something. I rolled over, intent on sleeping for just a while longer.
By ten after five, I was up and checking the trap. Yep. We sure did catch something. Little Mama! We had her cage ready for her within five minutes, and she was in it. I filled her bowl with at least 2 cups worth of cat food. Four hours later, ALL of her cat food is gone. (More on that in a moment.)
So, Charlie sees his mama, and he wants mama. Mama sees a kitten with this giant green thing attached to him, and it smells so nice and pretty. Yeah. She didn't recognize him. His old scent was washed off of him at the vet when he got his bath. This of course upset Charlie greatly.
So, Little Mama was screaming because she did not want to be in a cage. Charlie is screaming because he wants his Mama, but Mama keeps growling at him. Even in seperate cages, they can't seem to be in the same room right now.
I finally got the bright idea to put Charlie in the bathroom (he didn't do well out in the main room either, cage or no cage.) He calmed down. Little Mama has also finally calmed down and she's letting me pet her for a few minutes each hour.
I keep going in to pet and talk to her, hoping to win her trust. It seems Little Mama is going to have to be with us for a while. I don't think we'll be spaying her for a while.
Little Mama appears to be a little pregnant. Her stomach is distended, and firm, and she's eating food as fast as I can put it in her dish. We will have her checked and tested for all other possible causes (such as worms, which the baby had.) However, I've come across enough pregnant cats to recognize one. We won't spay while she's pregnant, but we won't let her back outside until she's weaned the babies and has been spayed either.
Needless to say, the next couple of months will be very interested. 1 husband that's allergic to cats. 1 me that doesn't like cats. 1 kitten that's been here a while. 1 kitten with a broken leg. 1 cat that's going to have kittens in 3 to 4 weeks. And three dogs that refuse to stay in the yard! This is definately a recipe for disaster and sleepless nights!
