Yesterday, the kittens turned six weeks old. It's hard to believe that just six weeks ago, they looked like overgrown mice squirming around. Two of them opened their eyes within hours, the others took a few days. One of them was up and walking by Sunday night. Two more by tuesday night, the rest were walking by the end of their first week. (They were born on Saturday, February 26th)
Now, they look like overgrown rats instead of mice, and they are everywhere. We had their first check up yesterday. Appointment was at 11. We finally got in at 1:30. We were there until 2:00. Mama got her last set of boosters as well as a shot to help control fleas. It last six months. We figured we'd rather do her that way in case she gets out and doesn't return.
The kittens get their first immunizations on Wednesday. We're trying to decide which flea treatment would be best for them. Advantage is out, since Mama still bathes them. So it's either pill or injection. Either way, we refuse to have flea infested animals so we have to figure it out one way or the other.
We came home and put them in their room. As I was walking out, Adam and Eli came running out. They were ready to leave the comfort of the room and explore the rest of the home. Charlie wasn't quite sure what to think and at first, was quite ornery. Later, when we opened the door to the bedroom, Charlie went in and hissed at a kitten. Mama tapped him from behind. Charlie's been fine with them ever since.
Mama would duck out of the room and go to Brother's room to eat their food. For the most part though, she was hiding. Adam and Eli spent the most time out here. The others weren't ready for it.
I woke p this morning to Mama exploring out front here. She was ultra quiet and practically tip toeing around. Once the household started waking, she ran back to the bedroom where she and five kittens hung out for the day. Only Adam came out and only for brief times.
Once the other animals were settled for the night, Mama decided she wanted the kittens in the bathroom. I don't know why. She meowed incessanty until they went there.
We're hoping that by the end of the week, they'll be comfortable with all of the animals and choose to move out of the bedroom by the end of the week.
I did try to sleep in my own room last night. Only, the kittens decided to play King of the Mountain. I was the mountain. *sighs*
We are now counting down two and a half more months, ten weeks. This is when we can get them spayed and neutered. Two weeks later, we'll start finding homes for them. Yes, they'll be three months old by the time they find homes. But, I won't have to worry about their babies winding up either back here or at the shelter.
I promised Mama we'd do her and her babies right. I'm doing my best to keep that promise even if these guys are driving me nuts.
