New Year's passed me by!

I missed out on New Year's this year. The Sunday before New Year's was a day of cleaning and organizing. I certainly did not want to start the new year with a cluttered mess of a home. Sometime on Sunday, however, I managed to injure my back. I still have no clue what happened or when it happened. By the end of the night I was feeling an ache but by Monday morning, I couldn't move.

I was unable to sit, stand or lie down without excruciating pain. Yet, somehow, I managed to get my bedroom clean. That wasn't the best of choices and I sure paid for it later that day and for several days after. I was seriously to the point that I had to have help to roll off the couch, (yes roll because sitting straight up just hurt) and do anything. Simply lifting a pen sent pain through out my body.

So, on New Year's Eve, I was hopped up on enough Vicodin to make an elephant fall asleep. It didn't make the pain any better, I just slept straight through it. And straight through much of New Year's day, as well. I missed out on the Happy New Year posts and phone calls. I didn't get to put up my resolutions, which means I still have time to decide on a few! I didn't see anyone's posts about how badly 2013 sucked, or how 2014 will be so much better. The new year simply passed me by this year.

Over all, 2013 was pretty good to me. In May, I contracted an intestinal infection that swept the country and killed many. My intestines came dangerously close to exploding, but thanks to a fantastic physician's assistant and a CT Scan, as well as some very strong Anthrax medication, I am here today. (I don't remember the name of the meds, just that it's used to treat Anthrax. Wow.)

I had to say good bye to my son, but only temporarily as he went off to start his life. We were so scared for so long but he defied all of the odds. He not only graduated, he completed his Eagle Scout goals, and collected his diploma as a drug free, tobacco free, alcohol free, childless young man.

Yes, 2013 was good to me and mine.

My house still stands, though it does need it's foundation repaired. It keeps us warm in the winter, cool in the summer (with some help from window units) and wild animals aren't entering to eat us up.

In April, there was a major storm through here that produced a tornado. My car suffered some damage, and a window got broken out of the house but this was nothing compared to the damage my neighbors suffered.

On Halloween, floods ravaged the area. Water came right up to our door step, but didn't enter into our home. Our tiny town escaped barely escaped Mother Nature's wrath, just as it had a couple of years before during the wildfires. While we escaped damage, neighboring towns weren't so lucky. This provided us an opportunity to help others and for my youngest to see that the world isn't just about her.

Our pantry and freezers got a bit bare a couple of times, but we had food. We didn't starve and our diet was still pretty healthy. Work was also slow at times, but we had work to do. This is so much more than many other people.

I got to travel into the past which improved my future. I got to take a good hard look into my teenage self which gave closure and hope, and even found a bit of love along the way.

The year ended with a bit of pain due to the back injury but even so, I am still around to see the new year begin.

2013 was a good year. I look forward to 2014, and hope everyone else does as well.
