Our yard is going to look like a giant salad bowl by fall! At least, if everything actually comes in, it will. So far, we've planted green beans, carrots, two varieties of onions, cucumbers, tomatoes and green peppers. For fruits we have blueberries, cantelopes and honeydew melons.
During the week, I'll also be planting pumpkins, watermelons, yellow squash, zuchini, corn, turnips, radishes, jalepenos and cillantro.
Inside, we have dill, basil, tarragon, rosemary, and sage. And in the back field, we have wild garlic.
When we harvest in the fall, whatever we don't use ourselves we're going to s;it into two piles. One will go to farmer's market so that we can try to get a return on the initial investment. So far, we've spent about fifty bucks. The other half will go to the local fire department for food distributions. I'd send more than that, but we do need to at least cover our expenses a small bit.
If we have a good harvest this year, then next year I'll be taking anywhere from 1/2 to 2/3 of an acre over and we'll be going all out on the planting. Every couple of weeks, we'll plant a new row of everything so that we get a nice, long, harvesting season out of it. I'll also be investing in rain collection barrels.
The barrels would be used mainly in cases of a drought. I'd fill them up in the beginning of the year, since we don't get enough rain to fill them anyway. Then, use them only when necessary through out the year.
I'm hoping for a good harvest myself. It would be great to not have to spend money on the veggies we love to eat. Or rather, that I love to eat anyway. We never seem to have enough of them.
