Yesterday I wrote about the puppy we found at the carnival but couldn't take home due to transportation issues. I also told you guys about my adventures with trying to catch this sweet little girl at the school and park on Sunday. I sent myself into heat stroke with my determination to get this puppy. She, of course, just ran the entire time.
On our way home the second time on Sunday, we stopped off at the animal shelter. I gave them a full description of her, and told her exactly where she likes to hang out. I also left our phone number and said that if they catch her, or if she is brought in, we want her.
Last night, I had to resist the urge to go and check on the puppy. I knew that if I saw her, I'd be spending hours trying to get her to come to me again and I simply wasn't able to do that. My husband has work, and well, I nearly made myself sick the first time with trying to catch her.
But for the past two days, my phone has been practically glued to me. I passed out my number to just about every person I saw and was anticipating a call from somebody saying "we have her!" Earlier this morning, that call came in. The animal shelter gave us a call and let me know they have Moby.
She is scared right now, but appears to be healthy. They have her in her own kennel separated from the other animals. They took a trap out there sometime yesterday and put it exactly where I said she lays down at. And they caught her. She has no injuries that they are able to see. We get to go and visit with her tonight and pick her up tomorrow.
Tonight, I'll be taking some spare collars up there to see if one of them fits her. We'll also take one of the sheets out of the kennels so that she can get used to the scent of the other dogs. She ate all of my treats on Sunday, so we'll be taking some tuna or hot dogs or something up there for her. I'll also take a squeak toy or two as well. If I can find her a rawhide, I'll take that to her as well.
I am so happy and excited right now and nervous as well. I hope that she remembers us, and that we left food and water for her, played and petted her, and gave her treats. I hope that she realizes we weren't trying to catch her to hurt her, but we were trying to catch her to love her. I'll explain it to her when we're there later tonight.
Her name is Moby. I did ask the staff at the shelter to start calling her by her name so she gets used to it. We figure that since she turned me into Captain Ahab for a day, this is a good name for her. And yes, I'm aware it won't be all peaches and roses at first.
This girl was dumped off during the carnival. We don't know what happened to her before she was dumped off, or what she's been through. We do know that on the last night of the carnival, she was being chased around and children were throwing things at her. Then, on Sunday, we were chasing her around (walking though and not running) so that probably scared her as well. She'll be in defensive mode and we'll have to work to break that wall down.
Hopefully it doesn't take as long as it did with Little Mama. Hopefully, it's as easy as it was with Charlie. The fact that she's still a baby and not a fully grown animal will help to make it easier. I'm excited to go and get her, and excited to go and get her training started. First on the list is Stop, Sit, Stay and Come. And leash training.
Anyway, I'm done rambling now. We'll have a new puppy by the end of tomorrow. Sometimes, ya gotta have a little help with those big white whales.
